Hello all the fascinated bonsai. How are you? My name is Suhendra. I want to say you my experience on how to keep, treat and create the bonsai of black pine. Maybe this experience is only suitable for the tropical sector and I hope that those that plants the black pine will have also the different experience to divide. I tried to plant the black pine since 5 years ago (around 1980) when I obtained the seed of a friend that travels abroad.

I knew and fell in the love with the bonsai of black pine, since I must learn from the bonsai for two years of a foreign book on how to treat and create the bonsai by the practice directly, for that I it mastery little by little. When I learned that the book, I saw a picture of pine and black Cemara (the Genedvriers) the bonsai that was so beautiful and sturdy. Even more if the black pine with his cracked bark for than it appeared old, antique and elegant. According to the planter bonsai Taiwanese, the black pine could live in the winter and the summer. In these seasons, its leaves always are green and prosper, for that we can call it the tree of green tree. Books that I read, I am sure that this tree could grow in the tropical sector. Of this time, I had been determined to obtain this type of tree and tried to plant and to grow it in Indonesia.

In the mi of 1980 I and my oldest child went to the Taiwan to attend an international exposition of bonsai. While looking for again special trees to enrich the bonsai variety in Indonesia, of Taiwan that I brought to the house some types of bonsai that I always had been seen on some books bonsais foreign that we could not find in the Indonesian market (before 1985). They are: The Tea of Hokkian (Carmona mycrophylla), Pyracanta (Pyracanta Grenulata), Ulmus (Ulmus Parfiflora), Karet Kimeng (Ficus Microcarpa). After buying these bonsais, a thing that I not forgetting being my essential target looking for is the Black Pine. Put aside my money of pocket to return house, I spent the remainder to buy various types of pine, beginning seeds, the young trees, growing half bonsai, and the growing bonsai.

Some planter bonsai Taiwanese said me that the Black Pine (Pinus Thumbergii) growing more better compare to no typical others of pine than they plant. There are three types of Black Pine:

1. Those with the long leaves (that generally is spread in the market).
2. Those with the short leaves (Seu A Sung).
3. Those with the mini-feuilles (Zuen Sau Hei A Sung).

The three Black Pines the are more preferred by the planter bonsai Taiwanese to be crushed. Next to that, I learned some techniques on how to plant and treat the black pine that I want to divide with you.

TREAT BEFORE PLANTING

Return, I had all my trees washed because it defended to bring the ground of Taiwan. This is the regulation among the countries to prevent the broadcasting of plague of plant. TREAT APRES TO HAVE IS PLANTS

After the black pine is planted in a jar, the trunk always solidly must be secured in the jar for that the tree is more stable. This is because any repotting tree is in the critical period. There is some amateur bonsai that does not know the media and the plant process, or not to have the a lot of patiences in to plant and to treat the black pine (that is different to maintain ficus or no typical other of bonsai). Do the treatment will take incorrectly to the death of black pine. When this arrives, they easily will say that the black pine not could be planted in Indonesia or will be dead if this is re-mis in jar. The worse one is when there are amateurs and salesmen bonsai that just saw than the picture of black pine on the books bonsai said the same things. This does the blue or the collectors bonsai are swindled and do not want to treat the black pine.

TREAT THE BONSAI OF BLACK GROWN PINE

The edlaguer (cutting the leaves), can be done when we see that the old leaves were grown the yellow one or appeared a not very dull one. We can do it in two manners: shaving or withdraw. The better manner is the second the one, that is little by little withdraws the old leaves. To prevent withdrawing the entire group of leaves, to use your left hand to hold the lower end of the group of leaves, and to use your right to withdraw the old leaves one to one, and to leave the young one one. If you prefer the first manner, shave the old leaves to almost 1 HIGHER cm of the stem of leaf. This is to provoke the new bud of the remainder of these old leaves. Unfortunately, shave will leave the brown tracks, and these ugly tracks facts there remains for the months before they have disappeared.

To keep the twigs and the short and dense leaves (to avoid disfigured or to keep the good form), to do the to follow:

1. Little by little to withdraw the old leaves every year.

2. Cut the twigs, the small twigs, and the new buds once every two or three years. This is to keep the form of the undesirable being. Two or three new buds climb of ordinary once a year naturally. Cut the prospering very (big) the bud and the very weak one (small) the bud while shaving on the part the lowest one. Leave the growing buds moderate until they relax their new leaves. 3. The better time to form and to shave the twigs are when we begin seeing its old leaves (the looks yellow and lessen). This shows that this tree is the stop that growing temporarily and saves energy before relaxing its new buds. This is the time more sure for edlaguer the black pine to withdraw some or shave, and the cutting of the twigs also, because this is the strongest period of the tree.

THE MANNER OF REPOTTING/CHANGEABLE THE GROUND OF BONSAI OF BLACK PINE

The process of repotting bonsai to be black pine that can be done it once in three or four years, because the root of the black pine grows slowly. Do not do repot before two years because its roots were not rather old. If we repot after 4 years, the roots will be too dense in the jar, and this will delay his growth and his fertilization.

Please repot this manner. After pulling the bonsai of the jar, we can see the root pile that was converged with the ground. Launch 1/3 left around the pile while scratching the ground and shave the roots that are too a long time. Then to put it again in the jar with the means treated above, while scratching, therefore the points of the old roots can penetrate directly in and converged with the new means. This will guarantee his life after repotting. Do not even repot by the cutting or sow the pile of ground and roots flat as if we coupon in split the cake and the plants then again. According to my experience in to plant the black pine, we should not do edlaguer while repotting. Once my gardener did not follow my instructions. When I went on the move and did not oversee it, it was repotting and edlaguer at the same time. This caused some black pines growing halves are dead.

In Indonesia that has two seasons, the better time to repot the black pine is between the end of dry season and the beginning of rainy season (around the beginning of September), but to do the attention to darken the pine condition also. Should be directed Repotting when the new bud brought up just before that the leaves bloom. When the leaves have the flower, then the tree will be weak and the risk of will be BIGGER repotting.
